Ozone Purification

Why Ozone Purification? The Maytronics Ozone Series is a secondary sanitation system. It breaks down the spent chlorine in the water – also known as Chloramines; and frees the chlorine in the water to concentrate on being a sanitiser. The addition of Ozone to the water acts as both a neutraliser and oxidiser, allowing the chlorine to be free to kill microorganisms and bacteria.

WHAT IS OZONE PURIFICATION?

Ozone is a powerful way to keep pool and spa water clean. It has been used in Europe for many years to treat public water and swimming pools. Ozone is a highly reactive form of oxygen (O₃) and is one of the strongest disinfectants available and is stronger than chlorine, bromine, or hydrogen peroxide. It can kill bacteria like E. Coli 25 times more effectively than chlorine and works about 500 times faster.

Ozone is naturally created in the atmosphere in two ways:

  • When sunlight splits oxygen molecules (O₂), one oxygen atom joins another molecule to make ozone (O₃).

  • When lightning passes through oxygen, it produces ozone.

Ozone works by creating short-lived “free radicals” that react quickly with contaminants before turning back into oxygen.

There are two main ways to produce ozone for pools and spas:

  1. Corona Discharge – Air passes through an electrically charged chamber where a small “lightning storm” creates ozone. This method produces high concentrations and is preferred for larger pools.

  2. Ultraviolet (UV) Radiation – Air passes near UV lamps, which excite oxygen to form ozone. This produces lower concentrations, making it ideal for spas.

Using ozone with chlorine or bromine can reduce the amount of these chemicals needed by up to 95%. However, chlorine or bromine is still needed to protect the water when the ozone system isn’t running. Ozone only lasts 20 seconds to 6 minutes in pools and spas. It also helps remove minerals like iron, which may form cloudy particles that the filter can capture.

Once ozone has cleaned the water, it turns back into oxygen, leaving your water looking, feeling, and even tasting better.

HOW DOES OZONE PURIFICATION WORK?

Other benefits of Ozone Swim Purification Include:

  • Reduces chemical use, keeping your pool cleaner

  • Energy-efficient and highly effective

  • Lowers chlorine exposure

  • Helps prevent skin and eye irritation caused by chlorine

  • Works with most filtration systems

Using Ozone Swim significantly reduces the need for added chlorine in the pool, therefore reducing exposure when swimming, leaving you with softer, clear water without the irritations from high amounts of added chlorine.
