In this DIY pool care video, our Poolwerx technician walks you through how to backwash a pool filter step by step, using simple checks and clear timings so you know you’re doing it the right way. You’ll see exactly when to backwash using your pressure gauge, how to avoid wasting good chemicals and salt, and how to keep your filter working efficiently for a safe, healthy pool.
We start with the pressure gauge, explaining how a rise in pressure tells you when to backwash your pool filter and when you can hold off. Then we show you how to safely turn the multiport valve with the pump off, move to the backwash setting, and run it for around a minute to a minute and a half, or until the sight glass runs clear.
Next, you’ll learn how to backwash and rinse your pool filter correctly. We switch the valve to rinse to reset the pipework and clean the last bit of sand or media, and explain why giving it an extra 15 seconds helps protect your water balance and keep the system running smoothly.
Our technician also has your multiport valve settings explained in plain language – including filter for everyday use, recirculate for moving floc through the water without clogging the filter, and waste for vacuuming a dirty floor or lowering the water level after heavy rain. You’ll also hear quick tips on salt water chlorinators, pump run times and how variable speed pumps can save you energy while keeping your pool sparkling.
